Change the Locks

This sounds really simple but many people forget about security. Most locks can be changed in about an hour or so. You should also re-program your garage door opener. You can do this by calling the manufacturer or checking the manual that came with the opener. It actually doesn’t cost much to have a locksmith come to your house and replace the keys and hardware. You can also get universal garage openers at a place like home depot. You just never know who has your garage door opener. It’s very possible that the previous home owner has given their opener to the neighbours at one point in time because of a trip they went on.

Garbage collection and garbage can

Houses may differ from apartment or condominium units in that you’ll have to think about which day your garbage, recycling and compost will be collected. Make sure you have all your garbage, compost and recycling bins in place!

Bring Cookies to Your Neighbor
Not everyone may be used to this or be comfortable doing it but it’s definitely a great way to get yourself acquainted with the neighborhood. Some communities have neighborhood watch programs and if you can figure out whom among the houses is in charge of that, bake them some cookies or send them a little gift, you’ll have set yourself up for success.

Utilities Need Attention

It’s understandable to get excited over organizing your furniture in your new place, but safety should always be your number one priority. One of the first things you should do is replace your furnace filter! You don’t know when was the last time your filter was replaced. “It’s always better to be safe than sorry” in this instance is not an overstatement. Install new batteries all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms that you have just because they should be done every six months to a year depending on the unit. Locate the fuse box in your house in case of emergencies. Familiarize yourself with the sprinkler system; make sure you know how it operates before you wait three seasons to clean up your lawn.

In terms of filters, you’ll want to think about the aeration filters in the kitchen, the air filter in the heating and air conditioning unit, and the fan above the stove. It’s easy for dust and other sediments to accumulate over time so changing your filters is best for everyone’s lungs.

Internet and Cable

This last one might not be so hard to think about as we are living in this digital age. To continue on your list of things to set up, you should think about how you’re going to set up the cable and subscribe to the internet. Consider how you are going to pay your hydro bills and sort out your mail situation with your recent address change.

Lastly, remember to clean the house completely not just for your own comfort but because it’s easier before you move in all your furniture. When the place is empty, it’s easier to notice any flaws or marks and get them fixed right away.
