Moving can be overwhelming and stressful at any time of the year. But there are certain times during the year that can be easier than others. If you have a flexible schedule, then it’s possible to avoid peak moving times when you have to compete with many others who also want to move. Let’s look at the ideal time of day and month for moving.
Most moving companies will tell you that the best time of moving per year is spring or fall, when they are less busy and can give you a better rate on your move. Moving companies are the busiest through June to September when the weather is great and everyone wants to move. Moving during the week can also be more cost-effective than moving on a weekend for those same reasons. Everybody is working from Monday to Friday and people typically have no choice but to schedule their moves from Friday evening to Sunday. Additionally, planning your move in the middle of the month is more cost-effective than at the beginning or end of the month. Those are times when people are moving into new places or leaving old ones. Leases and rent also start at the beginning or end of every month.
There are other factors such as having children who are in school, it might be a smoother transition for them if you’re moving when they are not in school and on a holiday. Another factor to keep in mind is your work schedule. Be sure to discuss with your employer the best dates ahead of time so there are no surprises along the way. You should also look at when your new home is actually available to move in to. It can be tricky to coordinate when you are required to move out of your old home and when you can move into your new one, so prepare well ahead of time!
If you are looking to use a moving company, do your research at least a few months in advance. Make a list of the moving companies you think would work for your type of move and call each one of them to figure out times and schedules. Set your moving date at least a month in advance so you had adequate time to prepare. If you really do have to move during the summer time, make sure to start early in the day. Getting an early start means more time for you to pack and transport everything while there is still daylight outside. On the other hand, evening moves can also be cost-effective if you’re scheduling a move with a company later on in the day.
If you want to save some money, make sure to schedule a move outside of high peak season (over the summer and during holidays) so you are not charged a high rate due to high needs. Depending on where you are located, Fall and Spring can have weather that would not drastically affect the conditions of your move. Planning your date and time carefully will save you both stress and money!
